Detachment Newsletter - Friday, April 19, 2002

I can't believe how time passes when your having fun.

This next meeting, Monday, 22 April we will have our elections and our new officers will immediately be installed and assume there respective positions and duties. the Department Convention will beheld in Ocean City on 8-9-10-11 of May. You received a packet in the mail in reference to it. I hope all who can participate will show up, especially the newly elected and appointed officers, even if it is for only one day to make an appearance.

There are several ceremonies being held inside Ft Meade this month for those of you who have DoD Passes on your car. Those who don't can forget it the way security is set up at this time. 4/23, Tue. 1500 hrs. at the Army Museum there will be a Korean War Memorial ceremony in honor of those who served during this conflict. there will also be a Massing of the Colors at Ft. Meade Sr. High. Everyone can access the school from Macarthur Blvd side of the school. This begins at noon, 4/21/02.

All in all I think we have had a moderate year. We have had some small pit falls but overall we have survived.

Our move to our new location so far has been beneficial. The VFW has cooperated with us 100%. Our Marine mascots are now undercover and protected from the elements, our sign has been erected out front and near the highway (click on image for a larger picture). Our membership is increasing thanks to a few who are out there "busting their butts" promoting the League.

The VFW serves Friday night dinners starting at 1800 hrs. to 2000 hrs. Call the post for the menu and prices. 410-766-9802. At 1900 hrs. Bar Bingo begins. Twenty-five cents per card and pots as high as thirty dollars, so come out and enjoy yourself. Drinks are very inexpensive.

Our own Chef Jake Jahelka offers very delicious and inexpensive lunches Monday through Friday from 1100 hrs. to 1400 hrs. His "GIANT Hamburger" served with French fries is the "talk of the town" all for only $3.50. Other offerings are available. Jake can also sign you up for the rifle and pistol team while you are having lunch.

Our May meeting, due to the busy time during the last part of May will be held 19 May, Sunday at the VFW beginning at 1500 hrs. The Annual Glen Bernie Parade is also scheduled for the morning and should be over by 1500 hrs. The new officers, appointed officers and committee persons will be introduced and awards presented to those who have given of their time and efforts. We would ask that those of you who are attending would bring a covered disk. Sodas will be served and a cash bar will be offered for those desiring alcoholic beverages.

Our new color guard is about 80% complete for an initial start. If you would like to participate please call Bob Mims @ 410-974-0445. The more members that get involved the more time everyone else can enjoy themselves.

Memorial Day Observances at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery will commence at the Cemetery at 1100 hrs. Monday, 27 May. It would be great to see as many of our Marines in red blazers and hats or just hats with their families in attendance. The guest speaker will be General Warren Sumter, USA.

Due to the fact that the postage rate will be increasing very soon we would like to save some money by e-mailing the news letter to those that are on the web and have e-mail addresses. There will be a sign-up sheet at the next meeting for those who desire to have this service. We appreciate all the cooperation we can get on this subject. If you cannot make the meeting and you want the newsletter via e-mail, contact me via phone or e-mail (410-761-2592 or mailto:jgh376@hotmail.com). The newsletter will be posted on our web site http://www.mclaacdet1049.org by the 3rd Thursday of each month. Letting me know you are accessing the newsletter via the web will stop your mailing service and save the League some money.

The following Marines have been in the hospital and are now recuperating at home:
  • Les Bates
  • Tom Uncle
  • Fred Downey
  • Bob Lloyd
We hope they are progressing and our prayers go out to them.

We also want to welcome our new Marines:
  • Tom Miorana
  • Al Preston
  • Dave Gall Rizzo
  • Bruce Bell
  • George Barbour
  • Bob Smith
  • Joe Cole
  • Terry Allen
  • Joe Stephens

WELCOME ABOARD AND A GREAT SEMPER FI FROM ALL OF US!

Marine Joe Stephens has purchased a few cases of "JARHEAD" hot sauce and selling them for $3.00 per bottle as a fund raiser for the detachment. The profit goes to the League. This is better than any hot sauce I have used. The flavor is great, not to hot nor vinegary to the taste. Stop by the post and ask the bar person for it. I assure you that you will come back for more. Pick up an extra for your neighbor or relative.

We are close to having enough ladies to start an auxiliary of the Marine Corps League. Mary Ellen Napels, Mid-East Division President of the Ladies Auxiliary will be present at our next meeting 22 April to talk to the women who have expressed an interest in joining. Please encourage YOUR wife, sister, daughter, mother and grandmother to attend this meeting.

Our Legislative Affairs Officer, Danny Fischio will have handouts available on the US House Committee on Veterans Affairs at our Monday night meeting. This will have a box score on Vets Legislation listing the name of the proposal, a brief summary and the current status of the proposal. Anyone wishing more info can visit the House Committee on Veterans Affairs at http://www.veterans.house.gov or from our web at http://mclaacdet1049.org/Other/1049_Links.htm.
