Winter and Spring are something of the past and summer is upon us.
|
A few things have happened in the past few months since our last meeting
and newsletter was sent out.
|
Again, our birthday ball set for November 9 is in full swing. Ed Ross and
his committee are doing a great job in putting this affair together as a
first rate production. If you are going to attend get your tickets and
table reserved now, not tomorrow or next week but now. The tickets will go
out to our own people first and their guests and then to the public. I
assure you all 116 tickets will be sold and paid for prior to October 1.
Don't let it pass you bye this year.
|
We had a great turnout for the Memorial Day Observance. We had members
assisting the American Legion Post 276, VFW Post 160 and 16 members in the
ceremony at Crownsville Veterans Cemetery.
|
A big gratitude of thanks goes out to our own Chaplain, Les Bates for
arranging the guest speaker, Major General Blum from the Army National
guard to speak at Crownsville. Former Marine, now Major General Sumptor of
the Army National Guard was originally scheduled to speak but due to a
death in the immediate family, was unable to attend.
|
Jake Jahelka, Pistol Team Captain reported that the pistol team done a
great job at Indiantown Gap, PA at the Marine Corps League annual pistol
matches. Their total scores increased over last year. As of this writing,
a full assessment has not been made available to any of the teams yet. If
you are interested in getting involved in the rifle team and shooting at
"The GAP" the last weekend of September, call Jake at 410-799-7578 for
full details. Those attending the pistol meet was Jake Jahelka, Denny
Bynum, Dan FIschio, Mike Hadley, Eugene Lynch, Roger Pirkey and Guy Hall.

Chaplain Bates has reported that the mother of our Marine Vic Halme
recently passed away in Norfolk, Va. after a long illness. Services were
private and we express our sincere condolences to Vic and his family.
|
It is also great to report that Fred Downey is up and running after a
4-way by-pass. Welcome to the "Zipper Club" Fred and keep up the things
you have to do to stay healthy.
|
If you know of anyone who is ill or in distress please call Les Bates at
410-987-0386.
|
Our Sr. Vice Commandant, Manny Airey need some help in organizing a couple
of fund raisers. Any volunteers would be greatly appreciated. We cannot
rely solely on dues to keep our bank account to a comfortable level. We
must have some operating allowances. Please get involved.
|
It is great to announce that we now have a Ladies Auxiliary and will have
their first meeting the same night as our general meeting, June 24 at
1900. Please encourage your spouse to join up and enjoy the fellowship of
what is going to be a great organization and a huge help to our League.
For more information, call the President, Dawn Parker at 410-551-7846.
(See the Auxiliary web page.)

Jake
Jahelka cooks up a great lunch at the VFW Monday through Friday. The food
is in abundance and the prices are very, very reasonable. The VFW also has
Friday night dinners offering a variety of different meals each Friday
night. After dinner they have "Bar Bingo" that everyone seems to enjoy.
|
The VFW
will sponsor a Crab Feast on August 11, 2002. For more information call
the post home at 410-766-9802 for tickets and times. It has always been a
great success with great food in the past. A few of our Marines work it
and help prepare the serve the food so you know it has got to be good. The
VFW has welcomed and enjoyed our participation to their Post activities in
the past and they will appreciate any help we can give them in the future
so don't hesitate to come out and support the activities of both our our
organizations.
|
Speaking on
behalf of the VFW Post 160 Auxiliary member, Marine Corps friend and post
horticulturess, Jane Barnes, really out did herself in planting flowers
and building the flower boxes around the building. The place really looks
beautiful. Everyone concerned owes you, Jane, a debt of gratitude for a
job well done.
|
Also a big kudo for our Marine Ed Ross and his partner Dan Krieseler,
Former Air Force, for donating the time and money to replace all the
lighting, wiring and ballasts in the large VFW sign on the front lawn
|
A great big thanks go to Marines Denny Bynum and Dan Fischio for there
generosity in keeping the grass cut around the post.
|
Congratulations to Bob Hole, the newly elected Commander of Post 160. Bob
has been this route previously so he is o stranger to the responsibilities
of the job. He has been active in the post for the past several years and
we, the League will continue to offer our support in anyway we can.
|
Also
congratulations to our very own Jake Jahelka on being elected Seam
Squirrel (Commander) of the "Cooties" Pup Tent 3 here at the VFW. The
"Cooties" are the honor society of the VFW. He can surely serve up some
good ones.
